Sgt. Bezner’s inspiration to become a first responder was deeply rooted in his upbringing. “Growing up, my father was Chief of Police in Lower Heidelberg Township, so I grew up knowing some Berks County police officers,” he recalls. This early exposure to law enforcement paved the way for his career. After graduating from Wilson High School, Sgt. Bezner served in the United States Coast Guard and then in federal law enforcement for five years. Ultimately, a desire to return home led him to the Reading Police Academy, where he was hired by Cumru Township. Fourteen years later, Sgt. Bezner continues to serve with unwavering dedication.
Over his years of service, Sgt. Bezner has faced numerous challenges, but it’s the rewarding moments that stand out the most. “When people appreciate what we do and just being able to help someone,” he shares. He speaks fondly of instances when individuals have approached him years later to thank him for his help. “Any difference that you can make for the community makes it worth it.”
Balancing the demands of a career in law enforcement with personal life is no easy feat. Sgt. Bezner candidly discussed the sacrifices involved. “There’s some sacrifices that I have to make. I have a wife and a daughter, and sometimes I have to miss things to do this job.” However, after years of hard work, he now works a permanent dayshift, allowing him more time with his family. This balance not only benefits his personal life but enhances his understanding and empathy in his professional role. “I know what it’s like to have kids, to be married, to face daily challenges, and I’m just here to do my part.”

He feels fortunate to work in a community like Cumru Township, where mutual respect between residents and law enforcement is strong. “It’s sometimes discouraging to see what happens on a greater scale, on the news or social media, but here in Berks, first responders are definitely supported.” He encourages his fellow first responders to actively engage with the community to build and maintain this vital relationship.
To those considering a career in law enforcement, Sgt. Bezner offers heartfelt advice. “I would ask them why they really want to do it. It’s long hours, sacrifice, and hard work, but I enjoy my job. I can’t picture doing anything else.” He emphasized the importance of genuine interest and dedication, and is always willing to provide guidance to those interested in pursuing this noble path.
Outside of his demanding job, Sgt. Bezner enjoys a fulfilling personal life. “Now switching to dayshift I do get to go to dinner with the family. We enjoy going out to eat, spending that family time when we can.” His hobbies include working out in his home gym, practicing Jiu Jitsu at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu in West Reading, and golfing. Ultimately, his goal is simple yet profound: “Just trying to be a good dad, good husband, and good police officer.”
