A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms tore through Berks County Tuesday afternoon, downing trees, damaging structures, and knocking out power to thousands of residents.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the county shortly after 3 p.m., as storms packing winds up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail approached from the west. A Wind Advisory remained in effect until 8 p.m., warning of sustained winds between 15 and 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.
At 3:43 p.m., a peak wind gust of 62 mph was recorded at Reading Regional Airport, the strongest reported during the storm. Additional high wind gusts were recorded across the county, including 52 mph in Hopewell, 50 mph in Lenhartsville, 43 mph in Sinking Spring, and 42 mph in Boyertown.
Reports of storm damage quickly followed. Emergency crews responded to multiple calls for downed trees—some blocking roadways, others falling onto homes. Fire departments also reported incidents of structural damage, including a roof being torn off and a building collapse. In Centerport, penny-sized hail was confirmed around 3:58 p.m.
The storm also caused widespread power outages across the county, affecting an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 customers at the height of the storm. Utility crews worked through the evening to restore service in impacted areas.
As of Tuesday evening, cleanup efforts were ongoing and no injuries had been reported. Local officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
