Matthew J. Stitzel, a respected local funeral director and former volunteer firefighter, has announced his candidacy for Berks County Coroner. With a deep commitment to service, Matt’s vision for the role is rooted in his experience with community care, a strong work ethic, and a hands-on approach to making a real difference.

A lifelong Berks County resident, Matt grew up in Lincoln Park with his parents, Richard and Mary Anne Stitzel, as well as his three sisters: Amy, Beth, and Meg. He graduated from Holy Name High School in 1988. Matt furthered his education by earning his Bachelor’s degree from Wilkes University, and subsequently, his degree in applied sciences from Simmons Institute of Mortuary Science.

In addition to owning and operating two funeral homes, Matthew has been active in his community in various roles. He served as a little league coach for Spring Township for many years and was an active firefighter and engineer with Spring Township and Goodwill (Muhlenberg Township) Fire Companies, Advisor Board member with Caron Treatment Center, and is a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, Whitfield.

He lives in Spring Township and is married to Becky (Simon) Stitzel. They have four children: Sarah, Jacob, Ethan, and Matthew James.

Matt is excited about a chance to serve the community in a new way. “As a funeral director, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of handling death with professionalism, empathy, compassion and care. Having served thousands of families in their time of need, it’s a responsibility I do not take lightly.”

Matt comes from a long line of funeral directors; his family has been in the funeral industry for nearly 100 years. “I believe my experience and my passion for serving others uniquely position me to make a meaningful impact in this role.”

If elected, Matt plans to shift the focus of the coroner back to personal involvement in the daily duties of the role. “While the office has evolved into more of an administrative function, I believe it is essential for the coroner to personally be involved and assume a stronger presence in the community. If elected, I will ensure that every case receives the personal attention it deserves, and that the community receives the high standard of care it has the right to expect.”

Matthew J. Stitzel’s candidacy for Berks County Coroner is built on a foundation of years of dedicated service, a deep respect for our Berks community, and a genuine desire to help those in their time of need. He will bring a fresh perspective to the office and will work tirelessly to serve with integrity, compassion, and dedication.
