The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On February 12, 2025, McDonald’s #5155, located at 6176 Morgantown Rd, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed a slime-like build up on the top non-food contact surface of the ice machine kick plate. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the warewashing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.
On February 12, 2025, Clair’s Family Restaurant, located at 3146 Main St, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violations: The facility was listed as out of compliance. Flour and sugar were observed to be stored in buckets that were previously used for liquid detergent. These buckets are not approved for food storage. Corrected. Multiple foods in the walk-in cooler and the refrigerator on the cookline stored open with no covering. Corrected. Multiple prepared food items in the walk-in cooler were not date-marked. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Soda dispenser nozzles and milkshake mixer, food contact surfaces, were observed to have food residue and were not clean to sight and touch. Observed a mold-like buildup on the fan grates of the condenser unit in the walk-in cooler. Shelving in the walk-in cooler was observed to have an accumulation of old food splatter and rust. Observed the wall covering by the ware washing machine to be peeling away at the bottom, creating a surface that is not easily cleanable.
On February 12, 2025, Boyer’s Food Market #3580, located at 408 Park Rd, Fleetwood, PA 19522, was inspected and found with the following violations: A pint of Swiss premium half and half was observed for sale in the dairy cooler with an expiration date of February 1,2025. Corrected. Observed several cases of frozen food stored directly on the floor in walk-in freezer, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Observed deeply scored cutting boards in the deli that are not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed rolling baking rack equipment, in the baking area, with an accumulation of encrusted food residue, and debris on non-food contact surfaces. Deli walk-in cooler condenser fan covers observed with an accumulation of dust build-up. Observed several cases of single-service, single-use articles stored in the back-room area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor. Floor in the baking area by the ovens was observed with missing floor tiles, was roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Wall in the meat room area, has a hole, or is broken and in need of repair. Wall to the left of the oven in the bakery area was observed with missing coving and a hole into the wall. This needs to be repaired. Wall above the rotisserie oven in the deli area of the food facility is extremely dusty, and in need of cleaning.
On February 13, 2025, Taipei Chinese Kitchen Inc, located at 2104 Van Reed Rd, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Non-food contact surface of sink sprayer hose was observed not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Non-food contact surfaces of bulk bin handles are not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Non-food contact surfaces of reach in cooler are not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil.
On February 13, 2025, Romano’s Italian & Mexican Food LLC, located at 501 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: Frozen Food in the deep freezer area stored not properly covered. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the walk in cooler, is not being date marked. Hood system has not been serviced since October of 2023. fire extinguishers need to be replaced they are outdated. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. No paper towel dispenser at the hand washing sink. Mops are not being hung to air dry.
On February 13, 2025, Kempton Hotel, located at 9910 Kistler Valley Rd, Kempton, PA 19529, was inspected and found with the following violations: Two fryer baskets were observed with broken wires. This is not smooth and easily cleanable. Food facility is reusing single serve souffle cups which are intended to be a single-service or single-use article. Corrected.
On February 13, 2025, Giant Food #6289, located at 2104 Van Reed Rd, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Three dented canned items observed on the shelves are and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Wall at produce rinse sink was observed with black organic matter and in need of cleaning. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Corrected.
On February 14, 2025, Prime Time Pizza & Grill, located at 3674 Pricetown Rd, Fleetwood, PA 19522, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food dispensing utensil in spice containers were observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. New food facility in operation more than 90 days and has not employed a certified food employee as required. The floor / wall juncture in dough prep area is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected. The handwash sink in the kitchen area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device. Corrected. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the kitchen area to remind food employees to wash their hands.
On February 14, 2025, Fleetwood Area SD Andrew Maier El, located at 355 Andrew Maier Blvd, Blandon, PA 19510, was inspected and found with the following violations: Underside of sink spray in the dish area is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of debris. Corrected. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed garbage disposal system leaking at the point that it is attached to the drain and water is pooling on the floor creating a potential for pest harborage. The leak needs to be repaired. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the employee restroom to remind food employees to wash their hands. Corrected.
On February 14, 2025, E and J Grocery and Deli LLC, located at 949 Franklin St, Reading, PA 19602, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed employees preparing food in the food prep area without any gloves. Install thermostats in the coolers. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the deli, is not being date marked. 3 compartment sink is not being used properly. Cleaning raw meats in the sink. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the area. Mops are not being hung to air dry.
Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: The Vibe Cafe & Lounge in Hamburg, Moyer’s Catering Inc. in Boyertown, Firehouse Coffee in Maxatawny, The Cab Frye Catering Company, Hissho Sushi at Giant #6289 in West Lawn.
