The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On February 3, 2025, Aldi #106, located at 20 Wilderness Trail, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violations: Receiving door located in the back-room area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.
On February 4, 2025, Wal-Mart Supercenter #5239, located at 567 Rt 100 N, Bechtelsville, PA 19505, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food contact surface of 2 fryer baskets were observed with broken wires and were not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Back of sink in the meat room was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of pink organic growth and debris. Non-food contact surfaces of fan guards in deli, meat, and produce walk in coolers were not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dust and debris.
On February 4, 2025, Subway #35824, located at 567 PA Rt. 100, Bechtelsville, PA 19505, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food contact surface of 2 insert pan lids are not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to cracking or scratching. Corrected. Food facility does not have available chlorine sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate chlorine sanitizer concentration. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in clean dish storage area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.
On February 5, 2025, Taco Bell/Long John Silver’s, located at 65 Industrial Dr, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violations: Floors in the drive thru, production line, prep area, mop sink, and dish area are observed with loose tiles and missing grout, making it not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. There is also a buildup of water in the areas where grout should be which could become a pest harborage area. Floor by the soda tower was observed with excessive dried syrup and in need of cleaning.
On February 5, 2025, Subway #11418, located at 1193 Berkshire Blvd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Mop sink has damaged areas that are no longer smooth, easily cleanable. Condenser unit in the walk-in freezer is not draining properly as evidenced by a plastic bin being used to collect dripping water. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sinks in the front area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Corrected.
On February 5, 2025, Jukebox Cafe, located at 535 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Facility was listed as out of compliance. Food employees observed in the cookline area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. A food employee was observed touching toast, a ready to eat food with bare hands. Eggs were stored above ready to eat foods in the refrigerator in the cookline area. Food in the walk-in-cooler and the refrigerator in the cookline area stored open with no covering. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required in the cookline area.
On February 5, 2025, Isaacs Restaurant and Deli, located at 94 Commerce Dr, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Facility was listed as out of compliance. Person in charge not making sure employees are following the established procedures for cooling soups prepared in the facility. An open employee’s beverage container was observed on the shelf under the slicer in the kitchen food preparation area. Corrected. Pepper jack tomato soup was not cooled from 135°F to 70°F in 2 hours. Corrected by reheating soup. This is a repeat violation for this facility. Observed pepper jack tomato soup being cooled in the 3-compartment sink in large containers and with tight fitting lids, which is not a proper cooling method. Soup was not being stirred and there was only a small amount of ice surrounding the containers.
On February 5, 2025, Burger King #12924, located at 12 Jetson Dr, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employee observed in cookline area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Corrected. Food contact surface of fryer basket was observed with broken wires and is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected.
On February 7, 2025, Works at Wyomissing & Building 24 & Slick’s Cafe, located at 1109 Bern Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: These areas are still in need of cleaning: (1) front counter shelves and floor near the fryers in Slick’s Cafe, (2) the floor under tables/shelves in the bakery area.
On February 7, 2025, VFW Post #6558, located at 123 S Water St, Womelsdorf, PA 19567, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips for the steramine tablets or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Can opener blade, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Four fryer baskets observed with encrusted food debris and was not clean to sight and touch. Soap dispenser was observed empty at the hand wash sink in the kitchen.
On February 7, 2025, Sushi with Gusto at Redner’s #77, located at 1149 Berkshire Blvd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed wet wiping cloths in the sushi preparation area not being stored in sanitizer solution. Corrected.
On February 7, 2025, Shillington Social Quarters, located at 38 S Sterly St, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Raw Shell eggs stored on top of ready to eat foods in the refrigerator in the kitchen. Observed a mold like growth on the interior of the ice machine. These areas are nonfood contact surfaces.
On February 7, 2025, Redner’s Fresh Market #77, located at 1149 Berkshire Blvd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the women’s restroom near the produce department to remind food employees to wash their hands. Corrected.
On February 7, 2025, Kenhorst Volunteer Fire Co, located at 411 Kenhorst Blvd, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in ware washing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.
On February 7, 2025, Jade Garden, located at 450 W Lancaster Ave, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods in the walk-in cooler stored open with no covering. Corrected.
On February 7, 2025, Clover Park Athletic Assoc, located at 102 S Brobst St, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed case of eggs stored directly on the floor in walk-in area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Breakfast foods (eggs) are served raw or undercooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer. Soda dispensing wand, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as require. Observed rodent droppings under the sink in the kitchen area. Facility has a pest control service.
On February 10, 2025, Original Mama’s Pizza, located at 1814 State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Loose rubber door gaskets observed on the 2-door True refrigerator in the pizza prep area. Observed an accumulation of dirt/debris on the floor under the food equipment storage shelving in the back area.
On February 11, 2025, Italian Garden, located at 851 Penn St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Observed visible evidence of mouse droppings in the food prep area. Possible rodent contamination. All equipment must be cleaned and sanitized to rodent activity. Mouse droppings observed. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodent activity in the facility. Pest control receipts and improving evidence of rodent control must be observed.
