In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge, in collaboration with several local organizations, will host a community cleanup event on Monday, January 20th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The effort will focus on cleaning up the neighborhood surrounding the Reading Public Library’s main branch at 100 S. Fifth Street.

Partnering organizations include the City of Reading Public Works, Keep Reading Beautiful, 18th Wonder Improvement Association, and Reading Rotary. The event promises to bring the community together for a meaningful day of service, embodying Dr. King’s vision of collaboration and civic responsibility.

“This year, we’re excited to work together to beautify the area around the library,” said event organizers. “Dress warmly, bring a reusable water bottle, and join us as we make a positive impact.”

Volunteers will be provided with all necessary tools, along with snacks, water, and hot chocolate to keep warm. Following the cleanup, participants are invited to gather inside the library for a special story time. The event will take place rain, snow, or shine, so attendees are encouraged to prepare accordingly.

Free parking will be available for volunteers at the 6th and Cherry surface lot, courtesy of the Reading Parking Authority.

The Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge, a Native-led nonprofit based in Reading, plays a key role in organizing the event. The center’s mission is to promote the visibility of Native Americans in Berks County and beyond through education, leadership, and activism.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate in this day of service to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
