In a tribute to the men and women who have served in the United States military and continue to serve their community as employees of the Reading School District, veterans staff members were presented with commemorative challenge coins. This gesture was an expression of gratitude from the district to honor their dedication to both their country and the students and families of Reading.
After transitioning from a building principal to the role of Director of Human Resources, Dr. April Rostek, recognized the need to foster a culture of appreciation within the district. “Our employees dedicate their time to our students, families, and community,” Dr. Rostek said. “We, in return, want to create opportunities to make them feel appreciated. Recognizing our veteran staff members on Veteran’s Day with this challenge coin presentation is just one way we are enhancing our workplace culture and celebrating the valuable contributions of our team members.”
The concept of recognizing veterans with challenge coins emerged from discussions on how to meaningfully honor those who have served. “Many of our service men and women do not serve to be recognized, but it is important to us, as a district, to ensure their sacrifices are valued,” Rostek explained. “The challenge coin is a longstanding military tradition that symbolizes camaraderie and honor, and it felt like a fitting tribute to our veterans.”
The specially designed challenge coin, bearing the Reading School District’s insignia, was created by the district’s Director of Communication, Nate Ross. This insignia adds a personal touch to the coin, symbolizing the unique bond between the district and its veteran employees. “These coins are a symbol of our gratitude and respect. They honor the dedication that our veterans bring to RSD every day. By recognizing their service, we reinforce our commitment to supporting and valuing every member of our district family,” said Dr. Jennifer Murray, Superintendent of Reading School District.
The Reading School District’s Human Resources Department collaborated with the Communications Department and the Superintendent’s Office to prepare for this event. Together, they developed the coin and organized its distribution, ensuring that each veteran employee across the district receives their coin as a personal thank you. “Our hope is that when these veterans receive their coin, they know that their contributions—both inside and outside the classroom—are deeply valued,” said Dr. Rostek.
The district looks forward to expanding this culture of recognition to include not only veterans but all employees in the future, celebrating their commitment and creating a supportive environment where all staff members feel valued.
