Junior League of Reading addresses teen health issues in ‘Teen Esteem’ panel

The Junior League of Reading organized a thought-provoking panel discussion titled “Teen Esteem” during its General Membership Meeting on October 16. The event focused on key issues affecting teenagers today, such as mental health, period equity, and food insecurity.

The panel featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including Dr. Olubunmi Ojikutu, MD; Dr. Kathryn Davis; State Senator Judy Schwank; and State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz. Together, they provided insights on the challenges faced by teens, highlighting the importance of addressing these concerns through both community action and legislative measures.

The discussion covered various aspects of teen health and well-being. Dr. Ojikutu and Dr. Davis shared their perspectives on the need for better access to mental health resources and menstrual hygiene products, emphasizing how these issues impact adolescents’ daily lives. Senator Schwank and Representative Cepeda-Freytiz spoke about current legislative efforts aimed at improving support for teens facing these challenges, focusing on the role of policy in driving change.

Organized by the Junior League’s Advocacy Committee, the event aimed to educate members and foster dialogue on these critical issues. The interactive format allowed attendees to ask questions, engage in discussions, and share ideas, creating a collaborative environment for advocacy and learning.
