Zachariah Milch receives 2024 Paving the Way to Educational Success Advocate Award

Zachariah (Zach) Milch, Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) Program Administrator for Alternative Education, was honored with the 2024 Paving the Way to Educational Success Advocate Award during the 2024 Advocates of the Year Award Ceremony held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at The Alloy in King of Prussia. The award celebrates individuals who demonstrate outstanding support for educational success, particularly for children experiencing homelessness and foster care.

Before his current role at the BCIU, Mr. Milch served as the Homeless Liaison at the Muhlenberg School District for five years, focusing on supporting at-risk students, including those experiencing homelessness. As BCIU Program Administrator for Alternative Education, he continues his work as an exceptional advocate and community leader, dedicated to removing barriers and ensuring these students receive compassionate and respectful support.

A proactive leader, Mr. Milch has been instrumental in sharing information with elected officials, community leaders, and school staff about the importance of providing educational programming and support for students experiencing homelessness. His efforts have earned national recognition, particularly for his exemplary response to the enrollment of an unaccompanied immigrant youth, highlighting his commitment and excellence among school staff nationwide.

Mr. Milch is pursuing a doctoral degree, focusing his dissertation on developing a comprehensive framework for Pennsylvania Homeless Liaisons.

Colleagues and leaders alike praise Mr. Milch’s dedication. Dr. Michelle Reichard-Huff, BCIU Director of Early Childhood and Student Services (ECSS), shared, “Mr. Milch is an outstanding professional who continually seeks to understand and address the challenges faced by students and families experiencing homelessness. His tireless work supports these students in overcoming obstacles while advocating for systemic change and the development of new programs. His lifelong commitment to learning and extensive experience in youth mental health, social-emotional learning, special education, and alternative education uniquely equips him to meet diverse student needs and ensure access to the appropriate educational programs.”

Kristen Hoffa, Regional Coordinator, PA Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) and Educational Stability for Foster Care Youth, added, “Zach approaches each challenge with care and compassion, consistently identifying and implementing effective solutions.
