When Katherine Thornton visits the Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing, she always stops by the Healing Garden before entering the building.

The spacious garden, which now includes a putting green, whimsical sculptures, and rows of greenery and colorful flowers, was the first project funded by the Reading Hospital Foundation. “It’s a full-circle moment for me,” said Thornton, longtime president of the foundation. “Thousands of patients and their families have enjoyed the relaxing space. It’s a reminder of just how far we’ve come, and just how far the generous support from our donors spans.”

The Reading Hospital Foundation hosted an Open House for staff and community members recently to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing, which is the only accredited rehabilitation hospital in the region.

Led by Kelley Crozier, M.D., the rehab hospital has nearly 600 staff members who provide specialized inpatient and outpatient services primarily for patients who have experienced functional loss or disability because of an accident, illness, or injury.

“Everything our patients might need is right here, all under one roof,” said Dr. Crozier, medical director of the rehab hospital, which also offers support groups and wellness programming. “This facility was specially designed to help our patients regain their independence so they can feel healthy and confident. Here’s to many, many more years of exceptional care provided by exceptional people.”

In addition to staff-guided tours, the Open House included live demonstrations of the state-of-the-art equipment and services funded by the foundation, including: a patient walking with the assistance of an exoskeleton; a patient using the bionic arm to play computerized air hockey; and a Parkinson’s patient showcasing how she improves movement and mobility through Rock Steady Boxing. Visitors also had the opportunity to see the Healing Garden, which, in addition to serving as a place to get fresh air, is used for therapy sessions.

“When our rehab hospital opened, it became a life-changing facility for our community,” said Charles F. Barbera, M.D., president and CEO of the Reading Hospital. “I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our staff, patients, and all those who helped us reach this amazing milestone. I’m excited to see what the next 15 years will hold.”
