The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On October 2, 2024, Weis Markets #175, located at 1112 W Wyomissing Blvd, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: 28 cans of assorted formulas observed with an expiration date of 9/1/2024 on the sales floor shelves. Corrected. Food dispensing utensil in breading and old bay spice containers observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the hot hold case in the deli holding fried chicken. Observed fan covers in several walk-in coolers and the wall of meat room cooler with an accumulation of dust, on non-food contact surfaces. Ceiling tile in the deli area is cracked / broken and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Floor area of the deli under shelves and below and behind the fryers was observed with food build-up and debris and in need of cleaning.

On October 2, 2024, Weaver Orchard Inc, located at 40 Fruit Ln, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food dispensing utensil in the bulk ingredient bins observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and debris. Observed a buildup of dust and debris on the fan covers in the 2 walk-in coolers.

On October 2, 2024, Snowfox – Weis #175, located at 1112 W Wyomissing Blvd, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Crab sticks observed out of their packaging and put into a store plastic grocery bag for storage in the walk-in cooler. Refrigerated ready to eat, thawed crab sticks a time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked.

On October 2, 2024, Redner’s Quick Shoppe #45, located at 2320 Penn Ave, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the one refrigerator in the deli. Can opener blade, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

On October 2, 2024, Arrowhead Golf Course Inc, located at 1539 Weavertown Rd, Douglassville, PA 19518, was inspected and found with the following violation: Two soda machine nozzles, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

On October 3, 2024, Weis Supermarket #184, located at 61 King’s Plaza, Oley, PA 19547, was inspected and found with the following violations: Wall in the deli area is made of FRP and is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. The floor / wall juncture in the deli area is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. Coving is not attached to the wall and needs to be repaired.

On October 3, 2024, That Burger Place, located at 10 S Summit Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Sanitizer solution for wiping cloths was 0ppm concentration. Solution not being changed at an adequate frequency. Corrected.

On October 3, 2024, Spunktown Tavern, located at 699 Englesville Rd, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violation: The business was listed as out of compliance. Observed food in the walk-in-cooler was stored open with no covering. Observed orange juice, sliced lemons was held at 45 °F, in the bar refrigeration area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in-cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Repeat violation. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in-cooler, refrigerators, and Bain Marie, is not being date marked. Repeat violation. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration in the bar area. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. The handwash sink in the bar area being used as a food preparation sink as evidenced by a food colander in the sink. Repeat violation. The handwash sink in the bar area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device.

On October 3, 2024, Speedway #06772, located at 154 Shillington Rd, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violation: Diet coke soda nozzle and 2 Icee nozzles, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

On October 3, 2024, Semper Pie LLC, located at 14 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as required.

On October 3, 2024, Munchiez Cafe, located at 10 Summit Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food was held at 45 °F, in the Bain Marie area, rather than 41°F or below as required.

On October 3, 2024, Little Caesars, located at 502 Lancaster Ave, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed flour and cheese stored directly on the floor in walk-in cooler area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Corrected. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in Bain Marie used for pizza assembly. Sanitizer solution for ware washing is empty. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Mop sink observed to a build of residue and debris. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid.

On October 3, 2024, Grocery Outlet of Shillington, located at 4200 Shillington Plz, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed two gallons of milk available for sale past the best by date of 9/23/24. Corrected. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Observed a mold like build up on the top grate of the prepackaged salad cold hold unit.

On October 3, 2024, Domino’s Pizza, located at 2844 Penn Ave, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the pizza toppings refrigerator. Working spray bottle with a chemical is improperly labeled with the wrong chemical name.

On October 3, 2024, Deluxe Restaurant, located at 2295 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Multiple food items in the walk-in cooler stored open with no covering. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk in cooler, is not being date marked. Corrected. Custard dessert and house made ranch dressing, a refrigerated, ready to eat time temperature control for safety food in the walk in cooler area, was date-marked by the facility, but was beyond the 7 day use or sell by date and requires discarding. Corrected. Hand wash station on the cook line needs guards on the side to prevent contamination of food. Floor on the end of the cookline by the ice cream freezer is missing a tile and has multiple broken tiles. Food facility is not removing dead or trapped pests from control devices frequently, as evidenced by observed old / decaying rodent in the basement area by the water heater. Corrected.

On October 3, 2024, Dan’s Deli, located at 1371 W Philadelphia Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in the cookline area, were not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the storage area, stored in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting).

On October 4, 2024, The Third Rail, located at 404 Main St, Blandon, PA 19510, was inspected and found with the following violation: Working spray bottle in dish area, used for storing cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On October 4, 2024, Jukebox Cafe, located at 535 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: The business was listed as out of compliance. Observed food employees observed in the cookline area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as beard covers. A food employee was observed touching cooked French fries, a ready to eat food with bare hands. Observed the fan guards in the refrigerator in the cookline area, are extremely dirty and in need of cleaning. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the Bain Marie, the refrigerator in the cookline area, and the display refrigerator in the dining area is not being date marked. Used rag was observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the bar seating area to remind food employees to wash their hands.

On October 4, 2024, Domino’s Pizza #4720, located at 8537 Allentown Pike, Blandon, PA 19510, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food dispensing utensil in cornmeal bulk container was observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected.

On October 7, 2024, Arby’s #5229, located at 15506 Kutztown Rd, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violations: Interior of ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have organic residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Drip tray at soda machine in the lobby a non-food contact surface was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Ceiling and wall area in the food prep area of the food facility has dust build up and is in need of cleaning.

On October 7, 2024, Antietam SD Kerry C. Hoffman Intermediate School, located at 2310 Cumberland Ave, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: Working container (spray bottle) in kitchen area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On October 7, 2024, Antietam SD High School, located at 201 N 25th St, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: There is no handwash sink located in the serving area of this school kitchen.

On October 8, 2024, Love’s Travel Stop/McDonald’s #31410, located at 3700 Mountain Rd, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violations: Two soda nozzles, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The electrocutor handheld insect control device located in food prep area is not designed to retain the insect in the device. Corrected. Excessive amount of standing water was observed on the floor by the soda box tower. Standing water needs to be cleaned up immediately to prevent pest harborage conditions.

On October 8, 2024, Kilts’ Kitchen, located at 71 W Penn St, Lenhartsville, PA 19534, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program.

On October 8, 2024, Governor Mifflin SD Middle School, located at 130 E Lancaster Ave, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a sanitizer bucket used for a wiping cloth to have a concentration of 0ppm. Corrected.

On October 8, 2024, Dunkin Donuts, located at 1 Cheltenham Dr, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: The Person in Charge does not have adequate control of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. An open employee’s beverage container was observed sitting on the paper products stored in the back area. Corrected. A food employee was observed touching the food-contact portion of the sugar scoop with bare hands. Corrected. Food dispensing utensil (scoop) in the bulk sugar bin observed stored in the sugar with handle in direct contact with the sugar. Corrected. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink (quaternary ammonia sanitizer). The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. The handwash sink in the front area being used as a dump sink as evidenced by observed pitchers and utensils in the sink. Corrected. Floor in the front area, where the ice cream freezers were removed, is damaged/missing tiles and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Food employee personal belongings (purses, wallet, clothes, fanny pack) observed stored with food items in the back prep area and with open boxes of munchkins at one of the front preparation tables. Corrected. First aid supplies/medicines being stored on the shelf above the back food preparation table and are a possible source of contamination. Corrected.

On October 12, 2024, Salino’s Imports Fairgrounds LLC, located at 2934 N 5th Street Hwy, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food dispensing utensil in lupini beans observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food. Corrected on inspection. Multiple food items (turkey BBQ/small mozzarella balls) were held at >41 °F and less than 44.1 °F in the large display case, rather than 41°F or below as required.

On October 12, 2024, Mediterranean Medley, located at 2934 N 5th Street Hwy, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: Glass measuring cup used as food dispensing utensil with potential for breakage into bulk food product. Corrected on inspection.

On October 12, 2024, Boardwalk Snacks, located at 2934 N 5th Street Hwy, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: Employee beverage containers observed in food preparation area.
