Mayor Eddie Morán, The City of Reading, and Keep Reading Beautiful (KRB), gave announced the February prize winner of the inaugural “My Super Neighbor” competition. This year-long initiative, aims to recognize outstanding home maintenance and promote community spirit, strengthening residents’ sense of belonging and appreciation.

Through a raffle-style drawing, Jeanette Buchanon, a resident of the 300 Block of South Seventh Street, has been recognized for their outstanding dedication to maintaining and enhancing their community space.

Jeanette has been instrumental in continuing the traditions of her foremothers through a neighborhood group centered around the Reading Iron Playground over the past several decades.

She has also been instrumental in transforming a former nuisance lot, “Lucky’s Lane”, into a community greenspace which has hosted various events including porch concerts, movie nights, and arts events. The pocket park also serves as a pollinator garden and stormwater management infrastructure. With the support of the city and other community organizations, her efforts have significantly improved the pocket park’s safety, attractiveness, and utility.

Residents are encouraged to keep the spirit of the competition alive by maintaining their properties and public spaces, and by continuing to nominate their neighbors throughout the rest of 2024.

Monthly prize drawings will continue to be held until December 2024. The competition will culminate with the 2025 summer block party grand prize drawing which will be held in January 2025.
